FAQ's for Domains
Domain Registration
Q: Can I register a domain directly through Patmos?
A: Yes. You can search for and register domains through the Patmos dashboard. We support a wide range of domain extensions (TLDs), including many specialty options.
Q: What is a TLD?
A: A TLD, or Top-Level Domain, is the part of the domain that comes after the dot, like .com, .net, .life, or .tech. Patmos supports both common and specialty TLDs.
Q: Does Patmos offer premium domains?
A: Not at this time. While we support a wide range of specialty TLDs, we are not offering premium (high-cost) aftermarket domains initially.
Q: What is WHOIS, and what does it mean for my domain?
A: The traditional WHOIS system has now transitioned to what’s called RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol). It provides details about who owns a domain name. For privacy, Patmos includes free domain privacy protection on eligible domains to keep your personal information hidden from public lookup tools.
Q: Is private registration included?
A: Yes. Domain privacy is included for free on all eligible domains. If selected, your personal information will be hidden from public records.
Q: What is the pricing for a domain?
A: Pricing varies by TLD. Common domains like .com are typically around $14.99/year. Specialty TLDs may vary depending on registry pricing.
Domain Transfers
Q: Can I transfer an existing domain to Patmos?
A: Yes. Most domains can be transferred into Patmos. You’ll need to unlock the domain and get an authorization (EPP) code from your current registrar.
Q: How long does a domain transfer take?
A: Transfers generally take between 1 and 7 days, depending on the domain extension and current registrar.
Q: Will my website or email stop working during a domain transfer?
A: No. As long as DNS settings remain unchanged, your website and email should stay online during the transfer process.
Privacy & Security
Q: Is domain privacy really free?
A: Yes. For all eligible domains, Patmos includes free privacy protection to hide your contact information from public lookup tools.
Q: Will I need to verify my identity to register a domain?
A: In most cases, no. Some TLDs or unusual circumstances may require identity verification, but for general use, registration is simple and quick.
Q: Is my domain secure with Patmos?
A: Yes. Domains are registered under your control, with registrar lock enabled by default to help prevent unauthorized transfers.
DNS & Domain Management
Q: Can I manage DNS settings through Patmos?
A: Yes. You have full control over your DNS settings, including A records, CNAMEs, MX records, TXT records, and more.
Q: Can I forward my domain or email?
A: Yes. Domain forwarding and basic email forwarding will be available at no extra cost.
Q: Can I use my domain with another website platform?
A: Absolutely. You can point your domain to any third-party platform by updating DNS or nameservers in your Patmos dashboard.
Q: Does Patmos support DNSSEC?
A: Yes. DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) is available on supported TLDs and can be enabled in your settings.
Billing & Renewals
Q: Are domains automatically renewed?
A: Yes. Domains are set to auto-renew by default to help prevent accidental expiration. You can manage this setting in your account.
Q: What happens if I forget to renew my domain?
A: Domains typically enter a grace period after expiration (usually up to 30 days). After that, they may enter redemption or be made available for public registration again.
Q: Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
A: No. Domain registrations are non-refundable because they are processed with the registry immediately and the fees are paid at the time of registration. Please double-check spelling and TLD selection before completing your purchase.
Q: How do I manage payments?
A: You can view invoices, manage billing methods, and add funds directly through your Patmos account.
